The Climate and Health Evidence Bank is hosted by the Pathfinder Initiative, a project that aims to accelerate the transition to net-zero healthy societies through providing practical, evidence-based pathways to zero carbon.
The Pathfinder Initiative is an international partnership of scientific experts, policymakers, international organisations and individuals, led by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and funded by the Wellcome Trust with support from the Oak Foundation. Scientific oversight for the Pathfinder Initiative is provided by an advisory group, previously the Lancet Pathfinder Commission, which published its report on pathways to a healthy net-zero future in 2023.
As part of the first phase of work, researchers carried out a comprehensive review of existing literature on the health benefits of climate action and gathered case studies from around the world of implemented solutions with measured greenhouse gas emissions reductions and health benefits.
The Climate and Health Evidence Bank was established to showcase these solutions and provide the best available scientific evidence to support the delivery of transformative actions for climate and health at global, regional, national and local levels.
Our research showed that most of the existing evidence on the health benefits of climate actions comes from modelling studies. We are continuing to gather case studies of real-world examples like the ones showcased here, and encourage countries, cities, organisations and individuals to submit your evidence to contribute to the evidence bank.
The second phase of the Pathfinder Initiative is underway, and has three main areas of focus: strengthening the evidence base for action on climate and health; supporting the implementation and evaluation of climate mitigation policies and actions that aim to promote health; and strengthening capacity of partners and key actors delivering high-ambition decarbonisation activities in low- and middle-income countries, with a particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa.
