The energy sector contributes a significant proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions. Actions to mitigate these emissions will be vital in finding pathways to net zero. There are also substantial potential health benefits, largely from reduced air pollution.

Evidence from the Pathfinder umbrella review showed that actions in the electricity generation sector resulted in the largest reductions in greenhouse gas emissions compared to other sectors. There was variability between action types, with actions such as decarbonising power generation resulting in large benefits. Urban policy and energy efficiency actions tended to have much smaller effects.
